Salmon sharks live almost exclusively in near-freezing Arctic waters — and can maintain a body temperature up to 20 degrees Celsius above the surrounding water. They are the record holder for internal heat retention among all sharks. Scientists study them as the model for understanding how warm-bloodedness evolved in fish.
